Stuart Mulholland is currently Plan International’s UK based Program Director where he is responsible for the development of Plan UK’s international grants portfolio. Stuart started his involvement with social development enterprises in the late 70’s as a Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) volunteer in Kenya where he taught and managed a technical training centre in Western Province for four years. Since then Stuart has lived and worked in many countries throughout Africa including Uganda, Egypt, Namibia, Sudan, Zimbabwe and Malawi where he was the country director or programs director for agencies such as Save the Children, VSO, NORAD, DFID & APT. Stuart’s interest in developing innovative projects which meet community needs has led him to be involved in the design, delivery and evaluation of numerous development projects across the world. Stuart has front line experience of emergency work in Northern Kenya, Sudan, Sri Lanka and Indonesia. Stuart’s period of work in the UK has involved him as Senior Lecturer in one of London’s largest colleges where he was Director of Short Courses involving community participation in social development projects; he was also Operations Director for the British Refugee Council where he managed the Kosovo airlift on behalf of the United Kingdom Government.

Stuart’s other responsibilities and interests include being a board member of two small disability charities based in London where Stuart’s experience and knowledge of organizational development has contributed toward the growth and stability of both organizations over the past eight years. In addition, Stuart is technical adviser to the Uganda Community Tourism Association following a brief spell during the late 90s where Stuart acted as Chairman on behalf of the Commissioner of Tourism in Uganda.

Stuart plays golf, enjoys reading, going to the theatre and traveling. He is married and lives in South London, England.
