The Kesho Trust

our history

The Kesho Trust developed specifically as a result of a visit to the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania in September, 2002. The Chief Park Warden and his staff candidly identified the struggles facing present and future management of the park. A recurring theme of the discussions was how best to maintain the ecological integrity of this World Heritage Site in the face of tremendous pressures from the burgeoning local population and their struggles for improved livelihoods. While the efforts being made in the Serengeti through a Community Outreach program were laudable, there was clearly an opportunity for more to be accomplished. Our founders are committed to assisting in this process in the Serengeti as well as in other protected areas and natural environments.

Our name also refelcts this origin. ‘Kesho’ is a Swahili word meaning ‘tomorrow’ and signifies our commitment to work towards a better future for communities and for conservation.

The Kesho Trust was established as a Society in the province of British Columbia on March 1, 2003 and was registered as a Canadian Charitable Organization in January, 2005. Subsequently, the NGO was also registered in Tanzania in March, 2006.
