The Kesho Trust

Maasai Partnership in Tanzania

The Kesho Trust has roots in Tanzania. We partner with organizations that share our commitment to conservation and community development. The young Maasai members of Ereto Maasai Youth [EMAYO] are committed to improving the standard of living in their communities and expanding the opportunities for other young people for education and employment in a modernizing society. They recognize that positive and creative change will benefit their culture and sustain it in the face of major changes in the world around them. They want to address issues of environmental conservation in a homeland where drought is becoming increasingly common, rangeland is under increasing pressure of livestock numbers and forests are diminishing. They want to improve education in communities where children lack the opportunity and the resources for education beyond the elementary school level. They want to protect their people from the ravages of new and devastating diseases such as HIV/AIDS. They want to encourage greater recognition of the rights of women and girls through better education and the removal of discriminatory practices.

The organization developed through the vision of a few young people from the villages of the Kibirashi area in Kilindi District of central Tanzania. Having had the rare opportunity for further education, they wanted to find a way to enable other youth in their community to have the same opportunity and at the same time to raise the consciousness of their communities as a whole to the challenges and opportunities of a modern world. Emmanuel Ole Kileli is the chairman of EMAYO. Together with members of the board, they are working to develop ideas and initiatives that will help them reach their goals and their communities reach their potential.

The Kesho Trust has entered into a support agreement with EMAYO because we believe the organization has the commitment and community support to make a difference in the lives of people of their district. You can support the work of EMAYO through donations to the Kesho Trust. Some of the initiatives that are developing through the support of people like you are:

  • rainwater harvesting and storage
  • education awareness
  • secondary school sponsorship
  • women’s literacy
