Katelynne Herchak

Katelynne was born and raised on the traditional territory of the Lekwungen speaking people. Kate is Inuk on her father’s side from Kuujjuaq QC and has strong ties to Rankin Inlet, NU. Kate holds a certificate in Indigenous Family Support, a B.A in Justice Studies and is now a graduate student in the Department of Geography at UVic.  Her position is funded through the IKG project and her research will be drawn from the needs of our Maasai partner organizations in Tanzania.

Kate believes in youth leadership and wears many hats outside of her education: the Acting President of the National Urban Inuit Youth Council; the interim Chair of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO’s Youth Advisory; and, a member of Pauktuutit’s Youth Gender Equality Council. Kate is passionate about decolonizing education and integrating Indigenous knowledge systems and perspectives into spaces to create meaningful relationships and change. Furthermore, she believes when we weave Indigenous youth, justice and climate together we have a better chance at our collective future.
