Participants from Enguserosambu Ward during the development of weather advisories
In responding to the impacts of climate change, communities need awareness and guidance regarding climate-related events. One of the approaches used to inform communities about climate events is weather advisories through participatory scenario planning. This method establishes a system for communities to receive weather information from national meteorological authorities, alongside traditional knowledge, thereby informing the public about expected conditions and precautions to take to cope with or mitigate the effects of climate change.
In this context, the Kesho Trust held meetings with village leaders, meteorology, agriculture, and livestock experts from the district councils of Kilindi and Ngorongoro, as well as traditional weather specialists in the villages of Elerai and Enguserosambu, to establish and strengthen the Weather Advisory Committees in those villages. Furthermore, through participatory scenario planning, the community and experts developed a strategic plan to address the impacts of weather conditions based on advice from meteorological authorities and traditional specialists.
The plan involves disseminating weather information for the three-month period from October to December, providing farmers and livestock keepers with guidance on what actions to take to withstand weather conditions, which, according to forecasts from meteorological authorities and traditional expertise, will be characterised by very little rainfall and extended periods of sunshine.
